| BIRDS KILLED with torture/mutilationsWed, 19 Nov 2008 04:42:38 -0800 by AgainstCruelty1http://getactive.pet a.org/campaign/turke y_investigationMore than 72 million of the nearly 270 million turkeys killed for food every year in the U.S. are slaughtered for holiday meals. This year, just prior to the flesh-focused Thanksgiving holiday, PETA conducted an undercover investigation lasting more than two months at the factory farms of Aviagen Turkeys, Inc., the self-proclaimed "world's leading poultry breeding company."While working at a series of Aviagen factory farms in West Virginia, PETA's investigator documented that workers tortured, mutilated, and maliciously killed turkeys. The following are just a few of the documented offenses:* Employees stomped on turkeys' heads, punched turkeys, hit them on the head with a can of spray paint and pliers, and struck turkeys' heads against metal scaffolding.* Men shoved feces and feed into turkeys' mouths and held turkeys' heads under water. Another bragged about jamming a broom stick 2 feet down a turkey's throat.* A supervisor said he saw workers kill 450 turkeys with 2-by-4s.* One man said he saw a coworker fatally inject turkey semen and sulfuric acid into turkeys' heads. To learn more, please read the investigator's log notes and experts' statements, view our photo gallery, and visit our blog.PETA's investigator repeatedly brought abuses to a supervisor's attention. The supervisor responded, "Every once in a while, everybody gets agitated and has to kill a bird." PETA also brought the abuse to the attention of Aviagen, and although the company made assurances and instituted some new rules, the cruelty did not stop.PETA's investigator also saw disgusting, cramped conditions. The rotting remains of about 70 hens were left amid live birds?who had to climb over the dead?for more than a day. A supervisor urinated in turkey pens, and workers spat tobacco in the pens as well. The suffering typically found on factory farms was also routine in Aviagen's sheds: Hens' beaks were cut with pliers, massive birds collapsed and died of exhaustion or heart attacks, and turkeys were thrown into transport cages. Those who eat turkeys are supporting this cruelty. Please help us put an end to this suffering by leaving turkeys off your plate and by supporting PETA's work in behalf of animals. Please also write to the National Turkey Federation and urge it to recommend that all turkey breeders implement PETA's seven-point animal welfare plan.More than 72 million of the nearly 270 million turkeys killed for food every year in the U.S. are slaughtered for holiday meals. | FLYSHIP 80 (part 2)Wed, 19 Nov 2008 04:21:59 -0800 by flightboatThe FLYSHIP 80 is a new and highly-innovative mean of transport for passenger traffic between the city centres, the harbours of coast cities, semi-enclosed seas and big inland waters. For the first time, a flying ship is available using the ecologically and economically likewise interesting ground effect and allowing hundred millions of passengers to travel faster, more comfortable and more cost-efficient.Reaso n: the FLYSHIP 80 closes the gap in global passenger traffic between the slow ship and the fast airplane. FLYSHIP 80 can use existing infrastructure facilities in the harbours easily; additional investments are not necessary. The FLYSHIP 80 requires only a quay with a gangway or a pontoon for embarking and disembarking. Airports and streets are unburdened as well as energy is saved, because the transportation with ground effect is clearly more efficient than with all other high speed carriers. The inventors and pioneers Alexander Lippisch and Hanno Fischer developed for the first time a total concept with which a "flying ship" is able to lift off from water and reach ground effect without the use of heavy and extensive electronics. Even bigger aircraft with much weight on board (for example large passenger numbers) can overpower the resistance of the water easily and can make the transition into the comfortable ground effect flight position, without an essentially higher engine performance than necessary for the actual ground effect flight. The lift off aid developed by Fischer Flugmechanik for the generation Hoverwing is an air cushion which is created by a part of the propeller stream under the hull between the two catamaran floats of the vessel, while a front and a stern skirt similar to those used in a hovercraft seals forward and aft. After lift off, the skirts automatically fold back. Through this principle, also the dangerous "pitch movement" can be avoided after the start. Hoverwing 2VT (FLYSHIP - 80 in the scale 1:3,35) during the first flight on the lake Baldeneysee. The two-seater prototype exists since 1996. The test craft of Hoverwing 2VT operated over 3.000 kilometres until now and proved efficiency of the concept covered by a multiplicity of measurements. For the first time, a ground effect vehicle for passenger transportation was licensed under the construction inspection of Germanischer Lloyd with the following class sign +100 A0 WIG A , WH 0,5/1,5 EXP . At the same time, the serial of the Airfish technology finished for the Airfish 8 with this admission. The FLYSHIP 80 can be used in all ports around the world to clearly ease connections between 150 km until 800 km for passengers. With travel speeds of 210 km per hour, it means travel times between 45 minutes and four hours. The route potential is enormous, whether within the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, in wide regions of the Mediterranean, between Spanish, French coasts and the Balearic, between the Greek islands, between Adriatic and Croatia, in the Caribbean, in the Red Sea or between the Maldives - for passengers enormous advantages open up because they don't need time-consuming driving to airports located outside the cities. They just board in the heart of the coast cities, the harbours. Some examples for itineraries from the Mediterranean area: Spain: Barcelona - Palma de Mallorca, France: Monaco-Cannes-St Tropez -Toulon, Greece: Piraeus-Heraklion. These are only some examples from an area in which approximately 150 million passengers per year travel between the coast cities by ferry. World-wide, this number climbs up to over 1,3 billion customers, an enormous potential from which the FLYSHIP 80 can use a not insignificant magnitude for itself long-term. It is a great place for spouses and children to hang out and leave the conference delegate to do their stuff. Previously the partners program has run over two or three days, generally doing the tourist hot-spots in the host city. The program has usually been offered for a minimal price, just to cover costs, with speakers spouses and children complimentary. In previous years partners program attendees have received their own t-shirts and bags. Considerations for organising a partners program include: * Number or participants expected (the registration system can handle this) Age and weights (for children) Transportation for everyone (mini-buses or several cars, car seats, baby seats etc) Catering Program itself - places to go to keep adults and children entertained Numbers of streams Related: kosova kosovo linux gnu freedom libre software conference | |

| TransportationWed, 19 Nov 2008 02:54:08 -0800 by 0214273125Transportation of Irish convicts to Australia was a political decision to solve the problem of the overcrowded penal system in Ireland. During the period of transportation (1791-1853), Ireland was in a state of almost continuous civil war, so there was great urgency to transplant criminals and political prisoners. The vast ships transporting prisoners from Ireland to Australia departed from the Port of Cork. Convicts from throughout Ireland were brought to Cork for their onward voyage, most of whom were held in a depot in Barrack Street, in hulks anchored at Cork harbour or at Spike Island while awaiting departure.By the time the first convict ship left, the Port of Cork was already well established in commercial and military terms, and was capable of facilitating such large vessels. In all, over 160,000 convicts were transported to Australia. Of this number, 30,000 men and 9,000 women and children were sent from Cork Harbour, making Cork one of the most significant points of transportation in the British Isles. | FLYSHIP 80 (part 1)Wed, 19 Nov 2008 02:06:07 -0800 by flightboatFLYSHIP 80 uses a peculiarity of the physics: the almost weightless hovering - like an Albatross, over the water, -. The revolutionizing realization of the concept to a transportation will change the passenger traffic between the coasts of the Mediterranean, from north- or Baltic sea, the Caribbean the red sea and other big waters.Because on basis of the guidelines of the IMO (International MaritimeOrganization ), and the MSC, Maritime Safety Committee, the FLYSHIP80 is regarded as a ship. The first FLYSHIP 80 probably enters operation in 2011 for distances between 150 km and approximately 800 km in order to transport up to 80 passengers between the coasts of inner seas and selected big inner waters.Under leadership of the engineer Dr.-Ing. Ulf-Dieter Ulken, who is well experienced in shipbuilding and financed through private investors, FLYSHIP 80 converts an idea as license taker of secured patents that were developed worked out and approved for more than 30 years. This idea of a transportation, that uses the so-called ground effect, needs only approximately two third of the energy, that is necessary for flying in higher regions.Dr. Ing. Ulf-Dieter Ulken made his passion - flying and shipping - to his occupation. Already in 1981, he received his private pilot license and began to study aircraft engineering 1982 at the technical University in Braunschweig. 1985 Dr. Ulken shifted to the technical university Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) which was newly established at that time, and continued his study in ship mechanical engineering.Hanno Fischer, former technical director of RFB (Rhein Flugzeugbau), is the inventor of the Hoverwing principle which is taken as a basis for the production of FLYSHIP 80.Hanno Fischer designs his colourful "Airfish" as a result and advanced it with several models. His newest throw is the "Hoverwing 2VT", a vehicle that is, thanks to a refined starting system, the most modern WIG in the world. With this new design the contact with the water is reduced as far as possible. The propeller is mounted on a pylon with a door that can be opened and closed. A small part of the propeller stream is caught with it. Through two skirts, one at the bow and one at the stern, an air cushion is created under the hull. It lightens the vehicle about round 80 percent.Hanno Fischer has licensed his patents to FLYSHIP 80 and therefore allows the conversion of the best WIG-concept and the realization of a revolutionary passenger transportation system. The ground effect allows an extraordinarily economic as well as thrifty flight with considerably lower fuel consumption as in free flight. The ground effect frequently was used already during the Second World War by pilots returning home, if they had only little fuel left. They flew back very close above the ground. The ground effect is an especially economic and ecological possibility of swift and comfortable locomotion. However, special construction characteristics are necessary in order to solve the physical problems which threaten the utilization of the ground effect. The problem is that the balance point of lift in free flight is located relatively far in front of the wing. It lies approximately within 1/3 of the so-called cord length. With maximum ground effect, however, this moves backwards to the centre of area located approximately 1/2 of the cord length.
