ADB Jeffrey Sachs Says Financial Crisis Presents Opportunity for Asia -- Part 4
Thu, 08 Jan 2009 01:19:27 -0800 by AsianDevelopmentBank

In an appearance at the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University, said that falling demand for Asian exports means the region will have to rely on public spending, such as infrastructure, health, education and energy reforms. He said that with some US$ 4 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, large current account surpluses and low inflation, Asia is well placed to expand public spending, which can help it maintain robust growth. He called on Japan, with $1 trillion in reserves, to adopt a more expansionary stance on monetary policy, and to make long term yen credit lines more readily available to countries in the Asia-Pacific in the region to help boost growth.

Nationwide Truckers Strike in India
Thu, 08 Jan 2009 00:56:11 -0800 by NTDTV

In India, a nationwide strike of tens of thousands of truckers continues on its third day. So far, it has affected food prices and the livelihood of market workers. Lets have a look. The All India Motor Transport Congress, representing about 6 million trucks across the country, started an indefinite strike on Monday. They are demanding reduction of diesel prices and withdrawal of service tax on truckers. The truckers vowed to stay off the roads until their demands are met.Although the strike has not had a great impact so far, vegetable traders say the prices have slightly gone up at Azadpur, the city's biggest vegetable market.[Ashok Kumar, Vegetable Trader]:"The strike has led to a hike in prices of the vegetables." The strike has also affected workers, employed by marked traders, who load and unload sacks of fruits and vegetables.[Surender Yadav, Market Worker]:"The strike has affected our livelihood. Earlier we used to get enough work, but these days there is less work."More than 70 percent of freight in India moves by road. Truckers had benefited from a booming economy that required the transport of steel and cement for construction. But the country's 200 thousand transport companies have been hit in recent months by a slowing economy, higher interest rates on vehicle loans and tougher competition from the railways.India cut prices of petrol and diesel in December but its economy is slowing down, amid the global financial crisis.Inflation at a near 10-month low, the truckers' strike may not have any long-term adverse effect.Authorities said on Monday that they will exempt truckers from service taxes and were ready to consider restructuring their bank loans.

Deutsche fürchten vor allem Inflation
Fri, 05 Sep 2008 13:36:35 -0700 by afpde
