I reacted on instinct and moved quickly back about ten feet from where I was standing in the crowd. It didn't make much of a difference, but I felt safe from the hot flying particles of what was left of each bomb-like explosion. However, I was not so safe from the huge ball that was getting lower and lower, closer and closer to the swarm of people gathered together to celebrate New Year's Eve. Some people thought of it as a mere countdown to the new year, but in my mind, it was a tragic death waiting to happen.On the ball there was giant digital clock that informed us, in bright green numbers, exactly how much time was left until it would come completely down and it would officially be 2009. The clock now read 00:25. I had only 25 seconds to get away.I started to wonder why I had come in the first place. Then I started wondering out loud. "Why did I come here? I hate New Year's. I hate Time Square. I should be at home watching this on TV with my family. It's much too dangerous for someone like me to be out here alone. I hate people. Gah."While I was standing there, talking to myself like an idiot, I slowly started to come out of my own little fantasy world and realize that the ball was starting to make a ticking noise, and everyone was beginning to chant down the remaining seconds. "10... 9..."8 seconds to run as fast and as far as I can. I began taking long strides backward from the ball that was now so close that the bright lights coming out of it like a disco ball were burning my eyes and making them all water-y. My vision was now as blurry as my ego. About 7 strides backward I hit someone. I turned around and saw... well, I couldn't see. I tried to clear my eyes by repeatedly blinking. It just made it worse. All the while trying to clear my eyesight, people broke out in cheerfulness and began hugging each other and shouting, Happy New Year! I guess the ball had dropped and it was now 2009. Oh, joy.A big woman behind me jumped up a few times, cheering, and that was enough to send me falling straight into the mysterious boy that stood in front of me. Fortunately, the anonymous stranger caught me by the arms and saved me from a nasty fall onto the pavement. His hands were wound around my forearms, just above my elbow, and my sight was clear now; I could see the boy perfectly.He looked about my age, maybe a year older. His light brown hair was about ear-length, longer in some places. His deep blue eyes were what struck me. I couldn't move. Strange, it looked a bit like he couldn't move for a while either, but he snapped back to reality after a few seconds.He let go of my arms and chuckled. "You should be more careful," he said loudly to be heard over the roar of the crowd.I tried to think of an explanation for why I was running, so I didnt seem stupid. "I-I-I...""Why were you running?" he yelled.I narrowed my eyebrows and tried to look serious -- anything but dumb. "T-That ball is scary." Pathetic.He laughed. "You're afraid of the ball? Why?""Well," I said as loudly as my voice could carry, "the wires on it could get tangled up and create sparks and stuff and we would all die. What if something happened and the ball dropped down too fast and hit us all? We'd never know when it would officially be New Year's."He laughed a little louder this time. "I'm Drake."I nodded. "Chelsea.""Happy New Year, Chelsea." He smiled."You, too." I smiled back. "How old are you? You look about my age. I don't think I've seen you at school." I already felt stupid. I didn't even stop to think that he could go to a different school."I'm 17, and you wouldn't have seen me at your school because I just moved here a week ago. My mom doesnt want me to start school yet 'cause she wants us to be completely settled in before we can re-start our lives.""Hm. Well, it's nice to meet you.""You, too." "Allegretto"IV. "Grave"Steffen Schleiermacher, pianoMention the Second Viennese School to most listeners and they will probably think of only three distinct names: Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern. Yet these three eminent figures taught a number of talented pupils, most of which are sadly forgotten. The names Adorno, Ullmann, Klein, Wolpe, Spinner, Eisler, and Jelinek are barely recognized even by musicologists writing on the Second Viennese School. Hans Erich Apostel (1901-1972) was another esteemed albeit lesser composer of the Second Viennese School. He studied with Schoenberg and Berg in the 1920's and left a fascinating corpus of works, which was unfortunately banned by the Nazis. If Apostel is remembered at all, it is for his important editions of Berg's operas.Apostel formed friendships with an assortment of painters and was a lifelong friend of the expressionist artist Alfred Kubin (1877-1959). In 1943 Kubin published a collection of 60 drawings which inspired Apostel to compose 60 piano miniatures. These miniatures were unpublished and if they still exist, are likely to remain so. However, Apostel supposedly borrowed material from some of these miniatures and composed a separate suite of piano pieces known as "Kubiniana" which was published as his Op. 13. These ten pieces are highly expressive, esoteric, and compelling specimens. Studying the scores is quite rewarding, but the music is equally powerful and, I think, accessible.This video is a little different from my usual fare. I am a huge fan of Kubin and felt inclined to spice up the video with various examples of his art. Apostel did not cite any specific works of Kubin which might be associated with each miniature. Thus my choice of art in this video was by my own whim. I merely wish to enhance Apostel's rather dark and mysterious miniatures with the kind of nightmarish and bizarre pictures that inspired him. | Brave Belt (Another Way Out)Thu, 08 Jan 2009 14:30:05 -0800 by Termite58Brave Belt was a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba originally consisting of Randy Bachman (guitar/vocals), his former Guess Who bandmate, Chad Allan (lead vocals/keyboards), and Randy's brother Robbie (drums). Randy also provided bass tracks for the recording of the band's first album, Brave Belt I (Reprise Records, 1971). But C.F. "Fred" Turner was added shortly after as bassist for the supporting concerts.[1]The band made the Canadian Top 40 with the minor hit "Crazy Arms, Crazy Eyes", which peaked at #35 in November of 1971. However, they missed the US charts completely.When Allan left the band in 1971, Turner became the lead vocalist for the Brave Belt II album (1972). During the supporting tours for Brave Belt II, Tim Bachman was added as a second guitarist.[1] After this lineup (C.F. Turner with Randy, Tim and Robbie Bachman) had shopped around the demo that was supposed to be a Brave Belt III album, new management convinced them to change their name. They eventually settled on Bachman-Turner Overdrive.Though Brave Belt is relatively unknown some 35+ years later, the importance of the band was summed up by Randy Bachman in a 2001 interview: "It was an innocent time of soul-searching. Nobody would play with me when I left The Guess Who. I was completely black-listed. I couldn't get a decent musician to play with me, except Chad Allan, who had also been in The Guess Who and left. He and I bonded together, and I might not have gotten started without him, even though he left sometime after that first album. Those [Brave Belt] albums are so important to me because, for the first time, I was making my own music, paying for it, finding strengths in it, and going through the process of finding the right music for the record.
