Arnold Johnson - Me And The Man In The Moon
Sun, 27 Jul 2008 06:21:24 -0700 by kspm01

Since some interest has been shown in this orchestra, I upload a great renditon by A. Johnson & His Orchestra. Johnson was an arranger, bandleader, pianist and composer. At just age 14, Arnold began career working as a pianist in a Chicago Chinese restaurant. He went on to study music at the Chicago Music College and the American Conservatory of Music, and got his first band job with famed early saxophonist Rudy Wiedoft. Common belief is that, after migrating to New York in 1919, Arnold organized and led the 'Frisco Jass (sic) Band'. However, there is a good possibility that the "Frisco Jass Band" was still another band incarnation of Gus Haenschen, musical director for Brunswick Records. For example, a 1917 recording lists Rudy Wiedoeft, as the leader of the Frisco Jass Band. In 1922, Johnson played at the Pelham Heath Inn in New York city. In the mid 1920s he briefly left the music business and sold real estate in Florida. He returned to music in the late 1920's and led what was considered to be his best band. The band appeared in two Broadway Musicals: George White Scandals of 1928, and Greenwich Village Follies of 1928. In 1929 the band was also featured in another Broadway musical, "Earl Carroll's Sketch Book." Between shows, he played night clubs and theater dates alternating between Chicago and New York. He quit the band business in the early thirties, when most people considered his band to be his best band ever, and found work in the radio studios as a musical director and a producer. His career continued through the 1930s and into the '40s. He became musical director and producer for several radio shows, including the popular National Amateur Night in New York. He and the band also appeared on several film shorts. During World War II he frequently entertained U.S. troops in Europe. He was the composer of several popular songs including "O" and "Does Your Heart Beat For Me?" Some of the most notable sidemen who worked in his bands were, (future composer) Harold Arlen, Vic Berton, Bob Chester, Scrappy Lambert, and both Danny Polo and Pete Pumigilo on reeds. Still other sidemen included Hector Marchese on alto sax, Lloyd Williams on trumpet, Gary Gillis on drums and Marty Quinto on violin/banjo/guitar. Besides the Broadway musicals, the band did some film shorts in the early thirties. This catchy record featuring Johnson's Paramount Hotel Orchestra was made for Brunswick in 1928. The lovely vocal remained uncredited.

Carl Fenton's Orchestra - Following The Sun Around
Sun, 13 Jul 2008 04:38:31 -0700 by kspm01

The Carl Fenton Orchestra (aka "Carl Fenton's Orchestra") was a title given to Brunswick Records studio bands through the 1920s. The name was invented by Brunswick music director Walter Gustave "Gus" Haenschen shortly after taking the position for their brand-new American division. Later, the name was taken by violinist Rudy Greenberg. Haenschen, whose own name was considered ill-suited for commercial recordings, haphazardly chose the name "Fenton" after the town of Fenton, Missouri, near his hometown of St Louis, Missouri. He attended Washington University. The first name of "Carl" was likely selected by Brunswick's office staff. The earliest songs recorded by Carl Fenton's Orchestra were Karavan and Romance, from October 1919. Brunswick Records released many "Carl Fenton" records, with various line-ups of musicians. The band was typically led by Haenschen in the studio, but was led by studio musician/conductor Reuben "Rudy" Greenberg during their occasional concerts. He has composed several songs, one of which was the sensation of the 1914 (Ziegfeld) Follies, where it was known as 'Underneath the Japanese Moon.'" (Several artists recorded that song in 1914, including Irving Kaufman (Victor 17699).In 1916, the Brunswick-Balke-Coll ender Company, then famous as a maker of billiard and bowling products, decided to enter the talking machine industry, - but only as a maker of phonographs - 'talking machines'. Their products were successful enough such that, in 1919, Brunswick introduced their own brand of Records. Haenschen was hired to manage the Popular Records Department for Brunswick-Balke- Collender Records in July, 1919. One of his duties including leading Brunswick's house band consisting of studio musicians, with personnel varying from session to session, and his group of musicians was among the first to record for Brunswick, cutting sides in October 1919. "Karavan" and "Romance" were issued in 1920 on Brunswick 2011, one of the first in Brunswick's popular music series, which began at #2000. "La La Lucille" and "My Cuban Desire" were issued on Brunswick 2012. Gus Haenschen used the Carl Fenton name as billing on the enormous number of records he led for Brunswick as musical director up until he resigned from the company on July 1, 1927. In 1929, the Carl Fenton Orchestra popped up on the Brunswick once again for about 13 titles, and it is believed that Greenberg led these dates; also, a young Benny Goodman is known to have played on two of them ("What a Day!" and "Maybe- Who Knows?") Another name that Greenberg used sometimes in place of "Carl Fenton" is "the New Yorkers," and one of the last Edison dance records, credited to that name, is also likely the work of Greenberg. The Carl Fenton Orchestra breathed its last gasp in the jazz age with six titles made for the QRS label in Long Island City in early 1930.In 1932, Greenberg had his name legally changed to Carl Fenton. He continued to work as a music director for radio and theaters till his death in January, 1942. Indeed, "Carl Fenton" seems to have enjoyed life after death; three sides recorded for the Master Records label on March 24, 1937 are credited to him. Ultimately issued on Variety, these are probably neither the work of Haenschen nor Greenberg, but may be Red Nichols, this time using the name as a gag. As for this lovely record, it was made for Brunswick on February 18th, 1927. I could identify neither the vocalist or the instrumentists.

No charges have been filed against the officer at this point."He thought (Carter) was looking at him wrong," said Dave Duty, owner of the Pot Belly Deli and Bar.Duty said Dan Hulsey thought Carter was gay and looking at him, so he used the glass.Witness Eric Haenschen said he ran to try to break up the fight on the deck of the bar. She never gets an award, even if she defeats the biggest hero, but if she's smart, she's the commander, and then a loose girl has it much easier.Frau Kubelski: Haenschen, why the long face, may I?Hans: Thanks, I really need it.F K.:A girl? Apparently there are only two problems left in the world, girls and Hitler. This is over. As soon as possible I'll pack and I'm out of here.Hans:Heading where?F K.:Friends in Kopenhagen can take me in.Hans:You've been around.F K:Warsaw, Kowno and Königsberg, Gdansk and now Gotenhafen. There has always been a friendly soul putting a stamp in my passport.Hans:I wish you luck this time as well.F K:A woman like me needs luck. Or should I simply kill myself?SS oficer:Good evening Frau Kubelski!Navy officer:Gee, what's going on, Lothar? Relax, man.SS:I'm here on a mission.FK:How can I help you?SS:You know pretty well why I'm here.Navy officer Dankel:Take off your serious face.Navy officer:Have a drink.SS:I have to interrupt the merriment here with a house search.FK:WHat do you mean? You know me, you come here too all the time.SS:Do you know a guy named Wischnewski?A carpenter. He used to work for you. He built a hiding place like in a crime novel.FK:No.SS:Bring him in. Now we'll see who's lying. Go. And you'll be in trouble if it's not true.Carpenter:Sorry Frau Kubelski.SS:There we go. You! Get out of there, quick.FK:What do you want from him he's my father.SS:To me he's a Jew.F K:Forget about the old rules, it won't take much longer!SS:You sassy impertinent person, that'll cost you!FK:Then I beg all of you, help us. You said so many times that we're friends. We didn't commit any crime. Dankel, Fritzen, Schott! You are heroes, you have all these awards for your courage, don't leave us alone.SS:Get them out of here! Who ever tries to stop me will be reported.F K:I feel pity for you, you poor creatures.Navy girl:But they can't do this! And we're looking on!Dankel:Yes, we're just standing by. Heroes, she said. "Carl Fenton" (Red Nichols) - Delirium
Thu, 18 Oct 2007 08:05:14 -0700 by merrihew

See ksmp01's recent great listing for background about "Carl Fenton". His real name was Walter Haenschen and he was the arranger for the group. On April 2, 1927, the Red Nichols band (including Jimmy Dorsey, Miff Mole, Pee Wee Russell maybe, Arthur Schutt, Dick McDonough, Joe Tarto and Vic Berton) recorded this hot tune under Fenton's name. After that, the "Fenton" group made one more record. All of these were Brunswick records. Then the Fenton name was sold and numerous records under that name were issued for the next 3 years for the Gennett label. They obviously thought that the original group was good enough to trade off the name. Then, one more was issued in 1937. Anyway, this is a great record which is very similar to the one issued under Nichol's name recorded 2 months earlier.
