New Airfish-8 (WIG craft)
Fri, 19 Dec 2008 08:55:05 -0800 by flightboat

In 1997 FischerFlugmechanik granted a license to Flightship Ground Effect Pty for an 8-seated Ground Effect Craft of the first Generation. The craft was designed and built at AFD Airfoil Development GmbH. The design is based on the well proven Airfish design, and is intended to be used as a fast over water taxi. Flightship Ground Effect Pty intends to produce this craft under license. During the development of Airfish8, it was attempted to receive a classification for this Ground Effect Craft as a ship, which finally led to the success Airfish8 is certified now.FF was founded 1979 by Hanno Fischer based of his 30-years job experience as technical director of Rhein-Flugzeugbau GmbH (RFB), to implement his acquired knowledge in research, evolution and manufacturing of civil and military aircrafts, as well as military ground effect vehicles to business application.Based on work by Dr. Lippisch Hanno Fischer together with his business partner Klaus Matjasic developed the first civil ground effect vehicles called Airfish. The Airfoil Development GmbH (AFD) was founded 1997 by Klaus Matjasic and Hanno Fischer to evolve and produce, commissioned by an asian investor, an 8-seat ground effect vehicle by using the Airfish technology. In result of this project the AFD GmbH gets the official approval as the first worldwide producer in case of ground effect vehicles by the "Germanischer Lloyd". The AFD also gets the certification DIN ISO 9001 by the "Technischer Überwachungsverein" (TÜV) for deplopment and production of ground effect vehicles. Based on decades of experience in research oft he ground effect by Fischer Flugmechanik and its realisation into commercial products done by AFD Airfoil Development GmbH, the German Government "Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung" (BMBF) in cooperation with the research institute for "Binnenschiffbau Duisburg" (VBD), pushed further continously the developing of the second generation of ground effect vehicles, the protected Hoverwing Technology. The technical demonstrator HW 2VT, which is working in this advanced and patent protected technology, is another milestone in respect of the scaling to major sizes up to 200 seats.

Aquaglide 5 NEW
Wed, 17 Dec 2008 03:44:40 -0800 by flightboat

«Aquaglide-5» accelerates speed up to 170 km/hour in cruise mode. No other type of high-speed passenger vessels is capable to compete with WIG-craft in this parameter. Transition to flight mode occurs at speed of 90 km/hour approximately. Such a speed is reached within 40-50 sec. while movement over the water and a little bit faster above snow or ice surface. Even at movement in displacement mode at speed up to 90 km/hour «Aquaglide-5» has obvious superiority against conventional passenger vessels due to better acceleration capability and maneuverability.Effi ciency of «Aquaglide-5» can be estimated by three basic criteria: achievement of qualitatively new level of transport services granting in regions with the developed transport network; an opportunity for creation of transport networks in areas and geographical zones where application of conventional vehicles is impossible or ineffective; commercial advantage. Low operational costs reached owing to minimum crew and maintenance staff, simple maintenance, applied hull and wings material (which does not demand special maintenance and does not corrode), absence of special demands for operation and maintenance infrastructure ensures high profitability of transport services. The WIG-craft brings the highest commercial advantage at passenger transportations on distances of 30 and more km.Comfortable interior of «Aquaglide-5» is equipped by passenger aircraft-type seats. Convenient allocation, practically all-around view due to the huge glazing area, comfortable entrance and exit through side doors make a trip on «Aquaglide-5» pleasant and unfatiguing. The additional factor improving comfort of passengers is the specific design of WIG-craft providing automatically balance of longitudinal and cross-section stability while maneuvers performance at high speed. At flight with cruise speed in screen mode passengers practically do not feel any vibrations and fluctuations of the hull. At parking on the water passengers of WIG-craft can leave it straight on wings.

FLYSHIP 80 (part 2)
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 07:36:25 -0800 by flightboat

The FLYSHIP 80 is a new and highly-innovative mean of transport for passenger traffic between the city centres, the harbours of coast cities, semi-enclosed seas and big inland waters. For the first time, a flying ship is available using the ecologically and economically likewise interesting ground effect and allowing hundred millions of passengers to travel faster, more comfortable and more cost-efficient. Reason: the FLYSHIP 80 closes the gap in global passenger traffic between the slow ship and the fast airplane. FLYSHIP 80 can use existing infrastructure facilities in the harbours easily; additional investments are not necessary. The FLYSHIP 80 requires only a quay with a gangway or a pontoon for embarking and disembarking. Airports and streets are unburdened as well as energy is saved, because the transportation with ground effect is clearly more efficient than with all other high speed carriers. The inventors and pioneers Alexander Lippisch and Hanno Fischer developed for the first time a total concept with which a "flying ship" is able to lift off from water and reach ground effect without the use of heavy and extensive electronics. Even bigger aircraft with much weight on board (for example large passenger numbers) can overpower the resistance of the water easily and can make the transition into the comfortable ground effect flight position, without an essentially higher engine performance than necessary for the actual ground effect flight. The lift off aid developed by Fischer Flugmechanik for the generation Hoverwing is an air cushion which is created by a part of the propeller stream under the hull between the two catamaran floats of the vessel, while a front and a stern skirt similar to those used in a hovercraft seals forward and aft. After lift off, the skirts automatically fold back. Through this principle, also the dangerous "pitch movement" can be avoided after the start. Hoverwing 2VT (FLYSHIP - 80 in the scale 1:3,35) during the first flight on the lake Baldeneysee. The two-seater prototype exists since 1996. The test craft of Hoverwing 2VT operated over 3.000 kilometres until now and proved efficiency of the concept covered by a multiplicity of measurements. For the first time, a ground effect vehicle for passenger transportation was licensed under the construction inspection of Germanischer Lloyd with the following class sign +100 A0 WIG A , WH 0,5/1,5 EXP . At the same time, the serial of the Airfish technology finished for the Airfish 8 with this admission. The FLYSHIP 80 can be used in all ports around the world to clearly ease connections between 150 km until 800 km for passengers. With travel speeds of 210 km per hour, it means travel times between 45 minutes and four hours. The route potential is enormous, whether within the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, in wide regions of the Mediterranean, between Spanish, French coasts and the Balearic, between the Greek islands, between Adriatic and Croatia, in the Caribbean, in the Red Sea or between the Maldives - for passengers enormous advantages open up because they don't need time-consuming driving to airports located outside the cities. They just board in the heart of the coast cities, the harbours. Some examples for itineraries from the Mediterranean area: Spain: Barcelona - Palma de Mallorca, France: Monaco-Cannes-St Tropez -Toulon, Greece: Piraeus-Heraklion. These are only some examples from an area in which approximately 150 million passengers per year travel between the coast cities by ferry. World-wide, this number climbs up to over 1,3 billion customers, an enormous potential from which the FLYSHIP 80 can use a not insignificant magnitude for itself long-term.

FLYSHIP 80 (part 1)
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 02:06:07 -0800 by flightboat

FLYSHIP 80 uses a peculiarity of the physics: the almost weightless hovering - like an Albatross, over the water, -. The revolutionizing realization of the concept to a transportation will change the passenger traffic between the coasts of the Mediterranean, from north- or Baltic sea, the Caribbean the red sea and other big waters.Because on basis of the guidelines of the IMO (International MaritimeOrganization ), and the MSC, Maritime Safety Committee, the FLYSHIP80 is regarded as a ship. The first FLYSHIP 80 probably enters operation in 2011 for distances between 150 km and approximately 800 km in order to transport up to 80 passengers between the coasts of inner seas and selected big inner waters.Under leadership of the engineer Dr.-Ing. Ulf-Dieter Ulken, who is well experienced in shipbuilding and financed through private investors, FLYSHIP 80 converts an idea as license taker of secured patents that were developed worked out and approved for more than 30 years. This idea of a transportation, that uses the so-called ground effect, needs only approximately two third of the energy, that is necessary for flying in higher regions.Dr. Ing. Ulf-Dieter Ulken made his passion - flying and shipping - to his occupation. Already in 1981, he received his private pilot license and began to study aircraft engineering 1982 at the technical University in Braunschweig. 1985 Dr. Ulken shifted to the technical university Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) which was newly established at that time, and continued his study in ship mechanical engineering.Hanno Fischer, former technical director of RFB (Rhein Flugzeugbau), is the inventor of the Hoverwing principle which is taken as a basis for the production of FLYSHIP 80.Hanno Fischer designs his colourful "Airfish" as a result and advanced it with several models. His newest throw is the "Hoverwing 2VT", a vehicle that is, thanks to a refined starting system, the most modern WIG in the world. With this new design the contact with the water is reduced as far as possible. The propeller is mounted on a pylon with a door that can be opened and closed. A small part of the propeller stream is caught with it. Through two skirts, one at the bow and one at the stern, an air cushion is created under the hull. It lightens the vehicle about round 80 percent.Hanno Fischer has licensed his patents to FLYSHIP 80 and therefore allows the conversion of the best WIG-concept and the realization of a revolutionary passenger transportation system. The ground effect allows an extraordinarily economic as well as thrifty flight with considerably lower fuel consumption as in free flight. The ground effect frequently was used already during the Second World War by pilots returning home, if they had only little fuel left. They flew back very close above the ground. The ground effect is an especially economic and ecological possibility of swift and comfortable locomotion. However, special construction characteristics are necessary in order to solve the physical problems which threaten the utilization of the ground effect. The problem is that the balance point of lift in free flight is located relatively far in front of the wing. It lies approximately within 1/3 of the so-called cord length. With maximum ground effect, however, this moves backwards to the centre of area located approximately 1/2 of the cord length.

AirFish - 8
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 02:12:02 -0800 by flightboat

AirFish-8 (ex. Flightship FS8) is a 17m wing-in-ground craft constructed by the Airfoil Development (AFD) in the Germany as a prototype craft for commercial production. It is designed with a capacity of six passengers and two crews or, alternatively, 750 kg payload and two crews. The design is based on earlier AirFish design principles and features a classic Lippisch's reverse delta wing configuration. Classification of the craft was first handled by Germanischer Lloyd in the Germany and later by the Lloyd's Register in Australia. The AirFish-8 provides efficient low cost transportation at intermediate speeds between that of the typical ocean going vessel and the conventional aircraft. The major capital cost advantage of ground effect vessels over aircraft is their classification as marine craft. This classification applies to all construction, registration, operator licensing and maintenance requirements and allows a lower construction cost as opposed to an aircraft or helicopters production cost.Under the IMO legislation, the AF8 is classified as a Type A WIG craft, in the category of marine vessel. In order for the technology to become widespread and accepted internationally, it is imperative that AF8 is certified by an international certification authority. Such certification is a powerful endorsement to the technology's viability and safety. Our AF8-001 was previously certified by Germanischer Lloyd in Germany. This, according to many, is indeed a landmark in the development history of WIGs, since no other WIGs has ever achieved that status only the Russian small Ekranoplan Amphistar Xplorer USA now known as Aquaglide-5 in 1998 at Bahamas region (USA).If the engine fails - the runway is always few meters below. The AF8 will simply glide forward for a descent of a mere 2 meters. Conventional aircrafts do not have this luxury, and thus the need to build in extra redundancy, at an increased cost. If need be, AF8 can land on water during an emergency in less than 300m, much shorter if a water brake can be installed and applied. Further more, AF8 can be equipped with a jump capability which allows it to jump over low obstacles in emergency.Comfort Because of the comfort of constant steadily flow of air cushion under the wings when the AF8 is cruising in ground effect, there is hardly any rolling and pitching movement since the AF8 is not touching the waves, there is no sea sickness as associated with typical marine travel. There is no pressure differential as experienced in aircrafts when the aircraft is climbing or descending.

KM Ekranoplan
Tue, 26 Aug 2008 14:14:53 -0700 by jaglavaksoldier

The Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau (CHDB), led by Alexeev, was the center of ground-effect craft development in Russia. The military potential for such a craft was soon recognised and Alexeiev received support and financial resources from Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. This led to the development of the Caspian Sea Monster, a 550 ton military ekranoplan. Before it, some manned and unmanned prototypes were built, ranging up to eight tons in displacement. The ekranoplan has a lifting power of 1,000 tonnes (984 long tons), among the largest ever achieved. The KM, as the Caspian Sea Monster was known in the top secret Soviet military development program, was over 100 metres (328 ft) long, weighed 540 t (531 long tons) fully loaded, and could travel over 400 kilometres per hour (249 mph), mere meters above the surface of the water.[6][7] Another model was the Lun-class, entering service with the Black Sea Fleet in 1987; the Lun-class vehicles had a top speed of 297 knots (550 km/h).The important design principle is that wing lift is reduced as operating altitude of the ekranoplan is increased (see ground effect). Thus it is dynamically stable in the vertical dimension. Once moving at speed, the ekranoplan was no longer in contact with the water, and could move over ice, snow, or level land with equal ease, though flight over land would have involved extreme risks unless the surface were dependably flat.
