In its campaign to intimidate bloggers in Iran, the countrys Judiciary confirmed on December 30 the detention of the man known to many as the Blogfather. Iranian-Canadian blogger Hossein Derakhshan is credited for his role in kickstarting Irans blogging revolution. His charges are related to insulting Islams religious figures.16.30 GMT-12:30 PM/EST Hossein Derakhshan is known to many as Irans Blogfather for kickstarting the countrys blogging revolution. On December 30, Irans Judiciary confirmed his detention. The 34-year-old Iranian-Canadian is held on charges related to insulting Islams religious figures. This move is only the latest in a series of government attempts to tighten the grip on nearly 400,000 active bloggers in the country. (GFX: According to Open Net Initiative country report, 400,000 blogs are active and 7 million access the Internet in Iran.)A bill, which overwhelmingly passed in the Iranian Majles on its first reading in July 2008, further tightens that squeeze. It applies the death penalty to web crimes that threaten societys moral security. These are activities promoting prostitution, corruption or apostasy.Tala Dowlatshahi, Reporters Without Borders Director New York: It is a bill simply put in place to alert the media and other members of civil society that blogging and sending out information, that it is not going to tolerate anybody going against the governments line. And to monitor online content and impose penalties for Internet offenses, Tehrans Prosecutor-General Saeed Mortazavi announced on December 10 the formation of a special prosecutors department for Internet crimes. The following day, the Paris-based press freedom group, Reporters Sans Frontieres, RSF, condemned this move. It stated Mortazavis decision is indicative of the Internets situation in Iran under control and regarded as a dangerous area. Besides the detention of Derakhshan, the end of 2008 witnessed more bloggers behind bars. According to RSF, Esmail Jafari of Bushehr was sentenced on charges of anti-government propaganda and disseminating information abroad. Additionally, the editor of the Azar Zan blog, Shahnaz Gholami, has been imprisoned since November 9 in the northwestern city of Tabriz. And in October, Mojtaba Lotfi from Qom ended up in prison.Nevertheless, many Iranians, including Farnaz Seify, keep on blogging. Farnaz Seify: It is a popular concept, especially for youths. It is a good way to practice democracy. You see the very readers who are against you and you talk with them. The Judiciary once blocked Seifys popular blog. And nearly 1000 webblogs are blocked almost every month. Theyre all required by law to provide their contact and web content information for the government to monitor otherwise, they and their Internet Service Providers are suspended and face criminal charges.©IranVNC 2008.
